Intermedia: Triumphant Gestures, (Attempts to) Understand Land
Saturday 24 July - Friday 30 July 2010
Thom Walker’s art practice draws from the field of geology, more specifically land movement and land formation. Developing from recent work, (Attempts to) Understand Land will explore scientific research from the early to mid 20th century which began
to put forth the theory of Continental Drift and latterly Plate Tectonics.
The work has been adapted and developed by studying visual evidence and data that was produced in support of these theories focussing on ocean floor scans of the sea bed's magnetism.
The drawing process is a driving element within Walker’s work. This is verified by the massive monochrome wall drawing that greets you as you enter Intermedia flanked by two new etchings. The physical interaction between the artist and the wall is intrinsic to his practice with the scale of each setting dictating the dimensions of the site specific work.
Walker graduated from the Environmental Art department of Glasgow School of Art in 2007 and has exhibited at the Studio Warehouse, Glasgow; Catalyst Arts, Belfast; artist run gallery space Dais, Glasgow and was a bursary winner for Pittenweem Art Festival in Fife. Last year he was part of the Ink Utero show at the Duchy Gallery, Glasgow - a collaborative drawing exhibition with Michael Kent and Tom Varley - and has recently been published in 2HB.
