Connecting Continents and Remembering George Lyle

The ninth International Glasgow Improvisors Orchestra Festival invites guests from all around the globe – bringing new projects, new approaches to music and new technologies, including works exclusively designed for GIO. This is the most ambitious festival yet in terms of geographical range of guests, with artists from North America, Australia and around Europe.

Highlights include Anne Pajunen (composer, singer, viola player and founder and artistic director of Swedish Modern Opera Ensemble), the Canadian electronic music and visual artists Instant Places, the ebullient multi-instrumentalist Javier Paxariño (Madrid), Adriana Minu (Bucharest) and Pawel Kodel (Poland) with their award-winning graphic scoring technology, and Alister Spence from Sydney, who will bring a new large work for GIO to premiere – Imagine Meeting You Here. We are also delighted to welcome back our ‘extended family’ members Maggie Nicols and Corey Mwamba.

There will be an exhibition of photographs curated by photographer John Gilmour, featuring GIO’s wonderful bassist, George Lyle, who died earlier this year. On the Thursday evening all the performances will be dedicated to George, including new works composed and designed around close musical collaborations George was involved in with members of the ensemble.
