Creative Lab Residencies 2022-24 Call for Submissions

APPLY HERE

Deadline : 6th July 2022 12pm

Centre for Contemporary Arts Glasgow (CCA) is pleased to announce a new call for Creative Lab residencies courtesy of a recent award of pandemic relief funding from Creative Scotland. Our approach to the Creative Lab remains, albeit with a new commitment on access for the programme, part of which includes a fourfold increase in the available budget for each residency. We are grateful to be able to offer a package of support for the residencies in reference to Scottish Artists Union guidance.

The Creative Lab residency space is for artists to explore new ideas and methods. Artists working in or exploring live art, contemporary performance, movement, new theatre, film, video, time-based media and interdisciplinary projects are invited to submit proposals.

Overview:

  • 4-week or 2-week residencies available.

  • £2,000 budget offered for 4 weeks, £1,000 budget offered for 2 weeks

  • 10 residencies of 4 weeks available

  • Available to individual or group applications

  • Not open to those in full time education at the proposed time of residency.

  • A separate budget for accessibility

  • Scotland based applicants will be prioritised

  • 1-bed artist studio apartment available to non-Glasgow based and international applicants.

  • 1 to 1 support from CCA programme team

  • Free access to Publication Studio if required

Applications can be submitted via the following online form that asks for basic info and a 500-word project description, CV or a list of 3 relevant projects and other relevant supporting info.

Objectives:

  • An opportunity for early career and established artists to have time to develop new ideas, rather than focusing on the final outcome.

  • To give artists an opportunity to show their investigations to the public and peers for feedback.

  • To provide opportunities to build relationships with other users of the building, including artists, cultural tenants and other CCA contacts.

Criteria:

  • Time spent must be on the development of the artist's own, original work.

  • Creative Lab time is for research rather than rehearsal time.

  • We are primarily looking for artists who are unable to easily fit traditional categories such as theatre, poetry, dance, etc. The focus is on contemporary, research-based artists who specialise in the realisation of ideas, rather than pursuing a specialism.

  • Artists will usually be encouraged to share work in a format to be discussed with CCA, such as an open studio day, an artist’s talk, work-in-progress performance or online via CCA Annex.

  • If applying as a duo, group, collective or any multitude of artists please applying with one application and note that the budget is available per residency, i.e. to be split between the group/ collective as you see fit.

  • Artists must also help with evaluation and provide appropriate documentation of their Creative Lab.

  • Artists must conform to CCA’s Health & Safety rules and regulations.

  • Equal Opportunities will be employed in the selection of these labs in line with CCA’s policies.

Further information:

  • The Creative Lab space at the CCA is a light and versatile room approximately 7m x 12m.

  • Support for four out of ten of our Creative Lab residencies can include the use of an accessible small residential studio apartment with a double bed and sofa-bed. The apartment has availability in December 2022, February 2023, October 2023 and February 2024 and is part of the CCA building.

  • Technical assistance for sound and lighting can also be requested.

  • Applicants should make it clear in the submissions if their Creative Lab would depend on technical or other provision.

  • CCA has £2,000 allocated for each four-week Creative Lab, or £1,000 for a two-week residency (which should cover any production or technical costs for in-progress showings etc).

  • We do not have a transport budget, travel to and from CCA should be considered before applying. International applicants are advised to contact their relevant embassies and consulates to see if they can support these costs.

  • We have set aside a separate budget to account for accessibility requirements. We are not prescriptive about what this might entail. This could include but is not limited to childcare, translation, BSL, hired items. Feel free to send us an access rider, attached as a PDF via the online form or sent to us directly via the submissions email. Helpful guidance is given here via Unlimited on how to put an access rider together.

We are happy to pass on more details on request but the following links offer an overview if you are not familiar with CCA or all the spaces in the building.

Selection process:

Applications from artists based in Scotland will be prioritised. The overall selection aims to find a balance in gender, ethnicity, sexuality, age, artistic content, contemporary discourse and media. We particularly encourage applications from POC artists, those with disabilities, long-term health conditions, from lower socio-economic backgrounds or other marginalised positions.

The applications are reviewed by CCA's programme team along with an invited artist from the previous round of Creative Lab residencies.
