Cities Reading Group Etel Adnan: Of Cities & Women

Mon 30 January 2017

Cities Reading Group Etel Adnan

As part of our ongoing discussion on cities, join CCA Curator Ainslie Roddick to discuss Lebanese American artist, essayist and poet Etel Adnan’s book Of Cities & Women (Letters to Fawwaz) - an extended meditation on the experience of city to city exile. From Barcelona to Skopelos, these letters trace the author’s travels and reflections as each city becomes a kind of hand mirror to the psyche and a locus of new understanding. Adnan reads the figures of landscape, nation, art, and street, as easily as words on a page, continually drawing startling connections between these elements. Reflecting a poetic process of “decoding”, she arrives at deeply original insights on the nature of feminism, politics, and loss through concise description and observation.

Participants should ideally read sections of the book before the event, in order to contribute to the discussion. Contact ainslie@cca-glasgow.com for a copy of the text.
