CANCELLED
Sonica 2019
Aurelia 1+Hz / proto viva generator

Thu 31 October — Sun 10 November 2019

We regret that this event has been cancelled.

Discussions about AI often focus on a fear that intelligent machines could supersede humans and other organisms – but what would happen if the robotic and the organic went into partnership rather than competition?

Robertina Šebjanič looks to the jellyfish, one of the simplest yet most enigmatic of living creatures, as the basis for a biocybernetic creature that could theoretically live forever by regenerating its cells and upgrading its technology. Two illuminated glass tanks stand side by side: in one, jellyfish flex and drift; in the other, a mysterious entity – semi-organic, semi-artificial – throbs and pulses. Sebjanič uses the motion of the (living) jellyfish to generate an ethereal bioacoustics soundscape – the soothing, amniotic sounds of a potential form of innovative new life.
