We are delighted to present an artist talk by Suleiman Mansour, followed by a conversation with Khaled Hourani.

Born in 1947 in Birzeit, Palestine, Suleiman Mansour can be easily described as one of the most influential artists active today in Palestine. Trained as a painter at Bezalel Art Academy in the late 1960s, Mansour's practice embodies the creation, reshuffling and promise of a Palestinian identity through his paintings, cartoons and founding institutional work.

He is a co-founder of the League of Palestinian Artists and the artist group 'New Visions' which was established during the first Intifada in 1987. This group particularly tied notions of land to political suppression through artists materials such as henna, clay and natural pigments, advocating a continuous claim to land through these.

Suleiman Mansour has had international solo and group exhibitions in Egypt, Sjarjah, Norway, USSR, USA and Jordan, in periods when these places looked and were organised in different ways from today. Mansour's strong links to Palestine as a land have also translated in co-founding many important institutions that are active today, such as the International Art Academy Palestine and the Al-Wasiti-Art Centre in Jerusalem.

This talks tries to define Suleiman Mansour's elaborate practice which spans over more than four decades and which has been a huge inspiration for Khaled Hourani. Focussing on giving an overview of this, a conversation with Khaled Hourani will speculate on the influences on each other's work against the backdrop of Palestine as a place.

Khaled Hourani's first retrospective continues in CCA Galleries until Sun 18 May. Find more information on his exhibition here.
