Breakfast Talk Francesca Sobande and Layla-Roxanne Hill of Yon Afro

We are delighted to welcome Francesca Sobande and Layla-Roxanne Hill to CCA on 29 March for the third in our series of breakfast talks.

Francesca and Layla-Roxanne are co-founders of Yon Afro, a Black-led collective which exists to centre the voices of women of colour in Scotland. By reflecting on their own and shared experiences, Francesca and Layla-Roxanne will discuss the (in)visibility and (hyper)visibility that Black women and women of colour face within the Scottish arts, media and cultural sector.

Francesca Sobande is a lecturer in marketing and advertising at Edge Hill University. Her work addresses issues regarding identity and inequality in the digital marketplace including, as part of research related to the media, experiences of Black women in Britain. Francesca has published work in the European Journal of Cultural Studies and has forthcoming writing in edited collections including It's HBO! Life After Legacy: Reading HBO's New and Original Voices (Race, Class, Gender, Sexuality and Power), as well as Surveillance, Race, Culture.

Layla-Roxanne Hill is a writer and independent researcher with a focus on digital engagement/exclusion and the Black Scottish experience. As Head of Engagement and Innovation at The Ferret, her work involves utilising new media models as narrative changing tools for under/misrepresented communities to create their own (hi)stories. In addition, Layla-Roxanne holds various positions within the National Union of Journalists and sits on the STUC Black Workers’ Committee.
