Cachín Cachán Cachunga! Eli Clare Reading and Disabled & Deaf Panel Discussion on Cure

Sun 10 September 2017

Eli clare 2aij

A smallish gathering of disabled and D/deaf folks (and friends), many of us also LGBQ, trans and/or non-binary, to welcome Eli Clare to Glasgow. We'll share ideas and experiences, sparked by Eli's work.

Eli Clare will read from his fab new book, Brilliant Imperfection: Grappling With Cure. Our other artist-panelists will share a bit about what 'cure' has meant to each of them as disabled and/or D/deaf people (combined with how cure also relates to some of us as queer, trans, non-binary, genderqueer, working class and/or racialised people) – in some cases accompanied by poems or films. Then we'll have a short panel discussion and open things up to other disabled and D/deaf people (or anyone grappling with cure) in the room.

Hosted by Sandra Alland and Nathan Gale, with Eli Clare, Bea Webster, Nuala Watt, Alison Smith and Emilia Beatriz.

More about Eli: Whether he's keynoting the Trans Health Conference or walking across the United States for peace, helping organize the first-ever Queerness and Disability Conference or facilitating an anti-ableism training; Eli brings a poet's passion for language and an activist's passion for social justice to his work. eliclare.com

'Disabled' is used here as an umbrella term. CCC follows the social model of disability (and other radical models of disability); we welcome the input of neurodiverse, mad, crip and/or any people who wish to address the idea of cure but don't use the label 'disabled'.

Please email sandra@blissfultimes.ca for additional directions, access requirements and any questions!

This is a relaxed event (feel free to come and go, tic, stim, stretch, etc), with BSL interpretation by Yvonne Waddell, and any films screening will be captioned.

CCA's full access guide can be found here. This event takes place in the theatre, which has level access via a lift to the first floor. The nearest train station is Charing Cross, which has a lift, and taxis can drop off outside CCA but Sauchiehall St is one way eastward. Gender-neutral accessible bathrooms are on every floor, some with changing spaces. There are two unisex accessible toilets on the ground floor, with level access and handrails, located at the rear of the Cafe Bar. The doors on both are 84cm / 33 inches wide. The transfer space is to the left hand side and measures 147cm / 58 inches in width and 93cm / 36.5 inches in depth. The changing facilities are in the first toilet. On the first floor, there is a unisex accessible toilet with handrails and a left hand side transfer space measuring 102cm / 40 inches wide. The door is 85cm / 33.5 inches wide. On the second floor, there is a unisex toilet with handrails but no side transfer. The door is 84cm / 33 inches wide and there is a turning space measuring 147cm / 58 inches (wide) by 93cm / 36.5inches (deep).
