Cryptic: Sonica Talks - Kathy Hinde, Mark Lyken & Corin Sworn in conversation with Rachel McBrinn

Sonica Talks

Cryptic Associates Kathy Hinde & Mark Lyken are in discussion with visual artists Corin Sworn and Rachel McBrinn exploring their individual experience of artist residencies and how this has helped shape their work and practice.

Kathy Hinde’s work grows from a partnership between nature and technology realised through audio-visual installations and performances that combine sound, sculpture, image and light. Drawing on inspiration from behaviours and phenomena found in the natural world, she creates work that is generative; that evolves; that can be different each time it is experienced.

Lyken is a composer and visual artist based in Glasgow, who creates sound works, film, paintings and installations. His work is inspired by the relationship between nature and technology and his collaborations with artists and scientists, have led to environmental and field recordings becoming an important part of his sonic palette.

Internationally renowned Canadian-born, Scottish multi-media artist Corin Sworn represented Scotland at the Venice Biennale 2013 and was awarded the Max Mara Art Prize for Women 2014. She is Associate Professor of Fine Art at the Ruskin School of Drawing & Fine Art, Oxford and her work has been shown at Chisenhale Gallery, London; Neuer Aachener Kunstverein, Aachen; Tate Britain and Tramway.

Rachel McBrinn is an Edinburgh-based visual artist working predominantly with video and site-specific installation, with a focus on collaborative and interdisciplinary projects. Her current work is concerned with the relationship between the eye and the lens as means of looking, as well as how the abstract nature of language and lens-based media can inform our concrete perception of time and space.
