Danilo Baraúna and Orlando Maneschy: Amazonian Video Art

Sun 24 January 2016

Amazonian Video Art

Screening of a sample from a Brazilian video art collection, composed of videos produced in the Brazilian Amazon, specifically works from the city of Belém between 1980 and 2015 included in ]Acervo[ in Amazoniana Collection of Art.

These videos discuss questions related to the history of the region, the relationships between body and nature and daily life in the city, mainly through conceptual and performative attitudes in front of a camera. At the same time, some videos discuss questions about distension of spatialities and temporalities on video art language.

The complexity of the Amazon is materialized in this artistic action, as video has a unique potency in this territory of multiples identities. The city of Belém is just one index of the potentialities of Amazonian experiences in video, becoming historically a fundamental axis to comprehend these productions in its character of specificity and globality, marking the technical difficulties in the first years of production historically imposed from distance, and at the same time the intellectual proximities that cities such as Belém can construct through its national and international relationships.

These screenings show a part of the history of video art in the city of Belém through the works of artists such as Armando Queiroz, Breno Filo, Carla Evanovitch, Cláudia Leão, Danielle Fonseca, Danilo Baraúna, Dênio Maués, Dirceu Maués, Jorane Castro, Keyl Sobral, Lucas Gouvêa, Luciana Magno, Maria Christina, Melissa Barbery, Orlando Maneschy, Roberta Carvalho, Toní Soares, Val Sampaio and Victor De La Rocque. Curated by Danilo Baraúna and Orlando Maneschy. This activity is part of a research internship supported by São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP). Research Advisors: Dr. Timothy Barker (University of Glasgow) and Dr. Almir Almas (USP-Brazil).
