Day 2: Evening Concerts
Tonight’s programme begins with Armin Sturm’s Sounds from a Common Garden.
Dedicated to the late George Lyle, double bass player extraordinaire and one of the greats of Scottish jazz and free improvisation, this piece explores improvisation as an ecosystem of individual niches and interactions. Alluding to an experimental approach in genetics, the title implies musical landscapes arising from heuristics as well as rigorous investigation.
The remainder of the evening is dedicated to our collaboration and partnership with Indonesia’s PK Ensemble, and will also feature Gamelan Naga Mas. There is a beautiful history with this wonderful and unique instrument which will be explained in words and music as the evening unfolds.
Over the past year, GIO has been developing new music with the Indonesian women composer collective Perempuan Komponis: Forum & Lab - a collective founded on the principle of solidarity among female and non-binary composers in Indonesia. The lab has grown into a safe space that welcomes inclusive musical exploration and experimentation. It aims to encourage musicians to create and promote a more equitable diversity of contemporary Indonesian music. This evening will showcase new works from the ensemble and in collaboration with GIO.

GIOFest XVII
Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra hosts the internationally acclaimed 2024 edition of their annual festival: GIOFest. This year sees GIOFest XVII bring together artists from around the world, presenting newly commissioned work created especially for GIO’s unique and diverse ensemble.
Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra - one of the world’s leading large improvising ensembles - is the hub of a truly international community of musicians, reflected in the range of works they perform, and in their year-round programme of innovative collaborations with groups and artists from across the world.
The festival will present a series of concerts, workshops, films and discussions, exploring new possibilities for large ensemble performance, improvisation and composition. We will host a live interactive virtual event with artists from around the world.
This year the focus is on our collaborations with partners from South East Asia – Indonesia, Japan and Sri Lanka, with artists and groups from these countries joining us here in Glasgow for GIOfest.
