Declaration | Article 29: Everyone has Duties to the Community

Sun 6 March 2016

Declaration

As well as rights, we also have responsibilities. Article 29 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights speaks to how a person's fulfilment of duties to the community is not only an exchange between the individual and the collective but also a form of self-actualisation; it asserts that human rights responsibilities will lead to "the free and full development of his personality". Dr Iris Elliott, Head of Policy and Research at the Mental Health Foundation, has a particular interest in realizing human rights in everyday life and how human rights can be a resource for social movements. For Declaration she will lead a workshop to explore how Article 29 provides opportunities for individuals and communities to confidently engage with human rights and interpret this Article in a manner that is relevant today.
