Devotional Collection Youtube Juke Box

To coincide with CCA’s current exhibition, Speaking in Tongues’ artist Sonia Boyce has prepared a special Youtube playlist from the Devotional Collection. Come along for an evening of music and dancing, and request your favourite from the list.

The Devotional Series began in 1999 with a group of women from Liverpool, brought together with Sonia Boyce, who were tasked with building a collective map of black British performers. Shirley Bassey was the first name to be nominated and from there the Devotional Collection was born. As word of mouth has spread, members of the public began sending CDs, records and musically ephemera to the artist, contributing to the Devotional Collection archive, part of which is installed in the CCA galleries. Ranging from the infamous to the unsung, from the early twentieth century to the present, the Devotional Series is a group portrait the upholds the existence, pleasure and persistence of women who choose to make music.
