Document 11: Kosma

Sun 20 October 2013

Kosma

The only dedicated international human rights documentary festival in Scotland returns for its eleventh outing with a host of exciting screenings, panels, workshops, music and events. Taking place at CCA from Fri 18 to Sun 20 October, this year's programme focuses on reflection and tension between the past and present.

In this complex and courageous documentary, director Sonja Blagojevic examines a radio network that has been connecting isolated Serbian communities in Kosovo for nearly ten years. After a wave of violence against them by the majority Albanians involving much death and destruction, most are now living in ghetto-like enclaves scattered across the province. With little or nothing in the way of physical contact, a key lifeline for them is the KOSMA Kosovan Serb Radio Network, a group of five stations who broadcast to the Serb community.

The film uncovers a land held together by tradition and a people whose lives are rarely seen in fear-mongering news reports. Kosma is a vivid fresco that depicts the juxtaposition between the lyrical and epic against the bleakness of a land scarred by conflict.
