Document 11: Summer with Anton plus Q&A

Summer with Anton
The only dedicated international human rights documentary festival in Scotland returns for its eleventh outing with a host of exciting screenings, panels, workshops, music and events. Taking place at CCA from Fri 18 to Sun 20 October, this year's programme focuses on reflection and tension between the past and present.
Twelve-year-old Anton lives with his grandmother in a small house outside Moscow. It is summer vacation, and we watch Anton playing with his friends on a lake, drawing and being read to by his grandma. Just like most other Russian children, however, Anton will be spending the rest of the summer at one of President Putin's youth military training camps. No camp fires or scouting expeditions, but defence techniques and long marches - this is how you grow up to be big and strong. Politics also play a role at this disciplined summer camp: in a classroom, the children hear from war veterans about the dangers of terrorism and extremism and watch gruesome videos about the continuing violence in the Caucasus. Then they go play "little Chechen" in the woods.
This quiet, commentary-free film is bathed in the warm tints of a summer idyll, but also features children learning to point guns at one another. Summer with Anton is a disturbing portrayal of the loss of innocence/childhood and the power of military brainwashing.
A panel Q&A follows the film.
