This documentary focuses on the Senegalese wrestling business, following promoter and politician Ndeye Ndiaye Tyson and five young men who create a wrestling school in the hope of becoming the next big wrestling celebrity. At the end of the season, Ndeye Ndiaye Tyson - well-known and inspirational to her fellow Senegalese - will choose just one of these amateurs, giving them the chance to take on an established pro in front of over 45,000 people in a fight that will change their life.
Wrestling in Dakar details a colourful and hopeful journey, reflecting on the human condition of those driven to fighting in the hope of escaping poverty. Links between wrestling, business, politics, religion and tradition are subtly sewn together, showing a viable alternative to illegal emigration that allows individuals to succeed within Senegal.
