Document Carla Novi Rana Plaza - Performance
Sun 12 October 2014
Carla Novi
In February 2013, Carla Novi was invited to take part in a Britto International Artists Workshop that took place in Dhaka, Bangladesh. As part of her project she visited a garment factory in Dhaka to interview women workers. She recorded a series of songs and interviews that were later used in a public event organized in Shilpakala Academy. Two months after her return to Glasgow, the garment factory that she visited in Rana Plaza collapsed, leaving more than 1,000 workers dead, becoming one of the worst industrial disasters in history.
As a response to this tragic event, Novi re-visited Rana Plaza a year after the disaster and began the journey of looking for the women she worked with in her previous visit. After a long search, Novi found Dilora Begum, one of the garment workers that survived Rana Plaza disaster and who had previously participated in Novi’s project two months before the accident. Both Novi and Begum will work together and present a collaborative performance as part of Document (Human Rights Documentary Film Festival) that will explore the tragedy and it’s global economic and ethical implications in the fashion and garment industry.
*A documentary film will be screened as a prelude to the performance (screening times TBC).
