The Ring in the Fish: Public Programme
Artist Talk with EMPIRE LINES Podcast
Sat 21 June 2025

Wheelchair accessible

Photography by Diana Dumi.
Jelena Sofronijevic, curator and producer of the EMPIRE LINES podcast, will be in conversation with Alia Syed about the exhibition The Ring in the Fish. Their talk will expand on Alia’s processes of archiving the inner lives of South Asian communities in 1960s–70s Glasgow and how they have weaved 16mm film, photography, and oral history to reflect on narratives of memory, migration and diaspora in Scotland.
The talk will be recorded live and later shared as an episode of the EMPIRE LINES podcast, available on all major streaming platforms.
Jelena Sofronijevic bio
Jelena Sofronijevic is a producer, curator, writer, and researcher, working at the intersections of cultural history, politics, and the arts. Their independent curatorial projects include Invasion Ecology (2024) and SEEDLINGS: Diasporic Imaginaries (2025), and they produce EMPIRE LINES, a podcast which uncovers the unexpected flows of empires through art. Much of their research centres on pluralising representations of diaspora communities and cultures, particularly from the Balkans and Yugoslavia, and more constructive, contemporary histories of non-alignment. More widely, they seek to platform lived experiences and perspectives often marginalised or excluded from representation, especially in anti-colonial and environmental activism. Jelena is currently pursuing a practice-based PhD with Gray’s School of Art, curating exhibitions of Balkan and Yugoslavian/diasporic artists in British art collections.
