Falling in Love with Frida explores the life, loves and legacy of Frida Kahlo. It is a reclaiming of a disabled artist, a love like obsession, an exploration of how to become an icon and an enquiry into how we shape what we are remembered for and how much can we really control others memories of us.
Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) was possibly the most famous disabled female visual artist that the world has ever seen. She has become an iconic figure throughout the world with many people knowing her name and recognising her face, as she was the subject and focus of much of her work painting over 70 self portraits throughout her relatively short life.
Through this piece Caroline Bowditch will celebrate and acknowledge the life, loves and legacy of Frida. In 2014 it will be 60 years since Frida died. Today she is clearly remembered for her artwork, for the iconic images she created that explicitly document her lived experience of disability but she is rarely remembered or acknowledged as a disabled artist.
