Die Innere Sicherheit (The State I Am In)
Germany 2000, 119 mins.
Dir: Christian Petzold. With: Julia Hummer, Barbara Auer, Richy Müller, Bilge Bingül.
German with English subtitles.
Always on the run with little money and the permanent fear of being discovered, fifteen-year-old Jeanne lives in the underground together with her parents, two former terrorists and members of Germany’s most prominent left-wing militant group, the Red Army Faction.
Actually, the small family lives a harmonious life, but restlessness and constant mistrust of other people increasingly causes friction. The parents expect patience and discipline from their daughter, but Jeanne is fed up feeling invisible in her life. She tries to make contact with people of the same age and eventually falls in love with Heinrich, a young surfer boy. But their secret meetings are a danger.
In many ways a German version of Running on Empty, The State I Am In takes a dramatic look at the difficulties faced by the children of fugitives. This feature debut from acclaimed German director Christian Petzold (Barbara, Jerichow, Yella) premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2000 and won both the German Film Critics Association Award and the German Film Award for Best Feature Film in 2001.
The Franco-German Film Series is presented by Alliance Française and Goethe-Institut Glasgow on a monthly basis between March and July 2014 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the cohabitation of both cultural institutions in Glasgow.
