Franco-German Film Series: Finsterworld

Finsterworld

Goethe-Institut and Alliance Française's upcoming winter screenings explore the borders between reality and fiction. We present modern fairy tales, set within contemporary society, which feature the bizarre and fabulous alongside the ordinary and well-known. Meet sinister, illusive and fantastic characters and explore their stories in these gems of European independent cinema.

Finsterworld is set in a Germany that has seemingly been plucked out of time. A land where the sun always shines, children wear school uniforms, policemen dress up as bears and pedicurists make biscuits for old ladies. However, an abyss lurks beneath this beautiful façade – and the film goes on a journey to its depths.

The film has been one of the discoveries at this year’s Edinburgh International Film Festival.

“A dissection of the German psyche as a dark, multi-stranded fairytale.” - The Hollywood Reporter

Dir. Frauke Finsterwalder. Germany 2013, 91 mins, German with English Subtitles
