Free Association & Marta Fontana Translating Joyce Lussu

Thu 13 February 2020

In this workshop, we will translate the work of Italian anti-fascism and anti-imperialist activist, poet, writer and translator Joyce Lussu. Marta Fontana will encourage intuitive translation inspired by Joyce Lussu's translating method. We will follow her way of translating the words of poets who were persecuted and imprisoned because of their political thoughts in many different countries of the world.

After Second World War, Lussu travelled around the world to meet personally persecuted authors and poets even in extreme prison and life conditions, translating their words in Italian. She used intermediary languages, drawings, gestures and intuitive communication in order to be able to translate a range of languages and their most sensitive thoughts about freedom and life.

No previous knowledge of Italian language required, just open minded attitude and interest in sharing words, drawings, signs, thoughts.
