Take One Action: Free Lunch Society

Mon 19 March 2018

Free Lunch Society

Could Universal Basic Income (UBI) help create a fairer and healthier Scotland?

Imagine a situation where you and everyone you know who lives in Scotland received the same minimum payment from the Government each month, regardless of your circumstances.

It may seem a far-fetched idea, but the concept of Universal Basic Income (UBI) has been gathering steam, with several trials set to take place in Scotland within the next couple of years. What used to be seen as a utopian dream has been backed by entrepreneurs, economists and philosophers from across the political spectrum and put forward as the next embodiment of true democracy. But what shape would it take – and would everyone be better off?

Spanning contemporary and historic perspectives this playful documentary powerfully brings the concept of Universal Basic Income, and its possible implementation, to life.

Join us for this one off screening, presented as a partnership between Take One Action Film Festivals and the Health and Social Care Academy, a programme of the Health and Social Care Alliance Scotland (the ALLIANCE).

We are pleased to announce that this screening will be captioned and subtitled and the introduction and post film discussion will be British Sign Language (BSL) interpreted and speech to text typed on the cinema screen.

Stay with us after the film as we explore Universal Basic Income and the effects its introduction could have for the people of Scotland, particularly in relation to health and our social care. We’ll be joined by a guest panel including Lynn Williams, an unpaid carer, who will be sharing her thoughts on the impact that UBI could have on unpaid carers and those they care for.
