One Sings, the Other Doesn’t (L’une Chante, l’Autre Pas)
It is 40 years since Agnes Varda released her feminist landmark One Sings, The Other Doesn’t, tracing a female friendship that develops against the backdrop of the Women’s Liberation movement. In the early 1960s, teenager Pauline (Valérie Mairesse) helps Suzanne (Thérèse Liotard), a mother of two, obtain an illegal abortion. Their close bond continues over the next decade as the two women choose different paths and experience lives touched by personal tragedy and political awakening. One friendship warmly illuminates this highly personal portrait of a generation.
