GFF19 The Thoughts That Once We Had (presented by LUX Scotland)

Fri 1 March 2019

The Thoughts That Once We Had

The most recent essay film by the maker of Los Angeles Plays Itself (2003) is a personal history of cinema prompted both by the theories of Gilles Deleuze and classic Hollywood musical comedies. Composed entirely from found-footage that ranges from the Marx Brothers to Pedro Costa, Thoughts is an absorbing and entertaining response to Godard’s Histoire(s) du cinema (1988). Thom Andersen’s reflections on the movies have been further elaborated in the recently published book Slow Writing: Thom Andersen on Cinema (2017, The Visible Press). With an introduction by curator and co-founder of The Visible Press, Mark Webber.
