Day One of GIOfest concerts kicks off with Steve Beresford and GIO. Steve, a film composer and improviser, has worked with Ivor Cutler, Ray Davies, Evan Parker, Eno and John Zorn. He has recently completed a tour with Stewart Lee featuring the work of John Cage.

Composers and improvisers Lemur then join GIO. This Norwegian quartet take influences from classic composition, noise, chamber music and free jazz making a highly innovative and unique blend of contemporary sound and attitude.

Finally, Gino Robair and John Butcher play a duet. Gino, based in California, works regularly with Tom Waits, Anthony Braxton and Otomo Yoshihide. An innovative composer and percussionist, he produced The Amanuensis for GIOfest in 2013, a highlight of the festival. John Butcher’s work ranges through improvisation, composition, multitracking and extreme acoustics. hcmf// have commissioned him to compose large pieces and his work (collaborations with Otomo Yoshihide, Phil Minton, Gerry Hemingway and Gino Robair, to name but a few) takes him around the world.

The Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra’s seventh annual international festival (GIOfest VII) brings together the world’s finest improvising and experimental musicians for new works and workshops with the community – a celebration of improvised music in all its forms.

The line-up of seminal guests this year (bringing with them new commissions/collaborations exclusively for GIO) includes Ilan Volkov, Maya Dunietz, Gino Robair, John Butcher, Norway’s contemporary music supergroup Lemur, Steve Beresford, Michel Doneda, Corey Mwamba and Maggie Nicols.

The theme of the festival is ‘Connected Elements’ and includes visual artists and filmmakers (Jo Ganter, Kate Cotter and Aileen Campbell) who have produced work exclusively for GIO to ‘connect’ with around the CCA during the festival.

Performances, discussions and workshops come together to make three days of inspiring, enquiring and life affirming music.
