GIOfest VII Day Three Ilan Volkov, GIO Small Groups & Free Improvisation

Sat 29 November 2014

An orchestra sat in a circle in the CCA theatre, they have various instruments and sheet music on stands.

GIOfest VII

Day Three of GIOfest begins with another premiere : a new work for the full GIO ensemble by the world-famous conductor and composer Ilan Volkov.

Next there will be the regular Small Groups event, this year curated by Steve Beresford. A series of short sets by newly-assembled small ensembles (including guests) will be connected by a theme to be introduced by Steve. This element of the festival is always one of the most innovative, with many surprises, challenges and humour.

Finally GIO will close the festival with a piece that is completely freely improvised. After the strategies, responses to external stimuli, through-written and graphic scores, GIO always takes the opportunity to play in the moment, and the adrenalin of all the events leading up to this final performance is sure to make it exhilarating and memorable.

The Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra’s seventh annual international festival (GIOfest VII) brings together the world’s finest improvising and experimental musicians for new works and workshops with the community – a celebration of improvised music in all its forms.

The line-up of seminal guests this year (bringing with them new commissions/collaborations exclusively for GIO) includes Ilan Volkov, Maya Dunietz, Gino Robair, John Butcher, Norway’s contemporary music supergroup Lemur, Steve Beresford, Michel Doneda, Corey Mwamba and Maggie Nicols.

The theme of the festival is ‘Connected Elements’ and includes visual artists and filmmakers (Jo Ganter, Kate Cotter and Aileen Campbell) who have produced work exclusively for GIO to ‘connect’ with around the CCA during the festival.

Performances, discussions and workshops come together to make three days of inspiring, enquiring and life affirming music.
