GIOfest VII Day Two Maggie Nicols, Ilan Volkov, Maya Dunietz & GIO

Fri 28 November 2014

GIOfest VII

Day Two of GIOfest begins with a new work by Maggie Nicols for GIO. Maggie was a key member of John Stevens’ Spontaneous Music Ensemble and has worked with Trevor Watts, John McLaughlin, Robert Wyatt, Keith Tippet and Zoot Money. She has been a close friend and regular guest at GIOfest for many years.

There follows a duet piece with Ilan Volkov and Maya Dunietz. Ilan, musical director of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, was chief conductor of the BBC SSO for many years. His reputation as a conductor and supporter of new music is legendary. Maya Dunietz is a pianist, sound artists and singer and has performed around the world with her group Women’s Voice. Her influences range from classical and jazz to funk and rock as she constantly pushes the envelope.

GIO’s final piece this evening: ’Connected Elements’ is a culmination of their work over 2014 and includes collaborations with artist Jo Ganter, filmmaker Kate Cotter and the ensemble Sonic Bothy. It will also be featured in ‘roll-out’ performances over the festival at various locations around the CCA.

The Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra’s seventh annual international festival (GIOfest VII) brings together the world’s finest improvising and experimental musicians for new works and workshops with the community – a celebration of improvised music in all its forms.

The line-up of seminal guests this year (bringing with them new commissions/collaborations exclusively for GIO) includes Ilan Volkov, Maya Dunietz, Gino Robair, John Butcher, Norway’s contemporary music supergroup Lemur, Steve Beresford, Michel Doneda, Corey Mwamba and Maggie Nicols.

The theme of the festival is ‘Connected Elements’ and includes visual artists and filmmakers (Jo Ganter, Kate Cotter and Aileen Campbell) who have produced work exclusively for GIO to ‘connect’ with around the CCA during the festival.

Performances, discussions and workshops come together to make three days of inspiring, enquiring and life affirming music.
