Glasgow Film Festival A Letter to the President (Namai ba rahis gomhor)

Afghanistan’s official entry to the Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars, Roya Sadat’s scathing and urgent film is a dissection of her country’s challenging political climate. Soraya (Leena Alam) is a strong-willed and passionate head of the Kabul Crime Division but her passion and strength places her at odds with her conservative husband and gangster father-in-law. Her involvement in a local dispute involving a young bride pivots her directly into the crossfire of the village male elders, sparking the embers that lead to her shocking downfall. A feminist elegy of a country at odds with itself, this is powerful cinema at its most potent.
