GLITCH Film Festival Watermelon Woman + Director Q&A

Sat 1 April 2017

Watermelon Woman

We are delighted both to screen a newly restored version of this historically significant film - being the first feature directed first by a black lesbian – and to welcome its director Cheryl Dunye to join us in person for Q&A.

This lively film has stood the test of time with its (sometimes humorous) exploration of representation of black women on screen, suppression of queer women’s histories, interracial sexual relationships and capturing of the VHS video store era. The central character, played by Cheryl Dunye herself, sets out on a mission to find out who a 1930s black actress listed only as “the Watermelon Woman” in the film credits really is…

Dir. Cheryl Dunye | 90mins | USA | 1996 | Screening with English subtitles & BSL interpretation for the post-screening Q&A

This film is F-rated. Films are given an F-rating if directed by women, written by women and/or present significant female characters on screen, in their own right. f-rated.org.
