Fiery Mexican sisters Maya (Pilar Padilla) and Rosa (Elpidia Carrillo) work as cleaners in a downtown office block in Los Angeles. Pay is low and bullying is common place. A fated meeting with Sam (Adrien Brody), a passionate American union organiser, leads to an unorthodox and imaginative campaign against their employer. The fight threatens their livelihood, family and risks their expulsion from the country.

Bread & Roses is a story about the most marginalised of LA communities daring to take on their corporate bosses against all odds. Bread and Roses is inspired by the real life “Justice for Janitors” campaign led by the immigrant cleaners, mostly women, in L.A. Loach unravels the events centring his tale on the spirited Latin American community who, with their battle cry of “no justice, no peace”, dare to take on the corporate powers.

The GMB Glasgow General APEX Branch are hosting a screening of this Ken Loach classic as part of the STUC week of action to promote St Andrew's Day as a day to celebrate inclusion, tackle racism and bring people together.

The film will be followed by a short discussion on the issues raised in the film.
