An evening of dance film screenings and panel discussion celebrating the centenary of Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, premiered on 29 May 1913 and considered the most influential piece of 20th century ballet and orchestral music.
We present the Hodson and Archer reconstruction of the original choreography from 1913 alongside the German choreographer Sasha Waltz’s celebrated 2013 production. Both choreographies are performed by the ballet and orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre under Valery Gergiev and premiered at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in May 2013.
After the film screening the evening continues with a panel discussion and Q&A. We have invited experts and practitioners who will share their thoughts on the two productions and relate them to their own experience of working with The Rite of Spring, its current and historical interpretations and how this work might take a special role in their own artistic practice and research.
Panellists: Christopher Hampson (Artistic Director Scottish Ballet), Jay Capperauld (Composer), Lucy Weir (Glasgow University), Paul Tyers (Artistic Director BA in Modern Ballet, Royal Conservatoire & Scottish Ballet tbc), Richard Honner (Resident Conductor Scottish Ballet). Moderation: Dr. Anselm Heinrich (Glasgow University)
After a brief panel discussion the dialogue will then be open to questions, comments and thoughts from the audience.
