How do practitioners, interpreters and service users work through the challenges of intercultural communication in healthcare settings?

What can we learn from their experiences?

Where do they need support?

Interpreters in healthcare impact on the experience of migrants and healthcare providers. This 2 year GRAMNet interdisciplinary research project explored the experiences of practitioners, interpreters and migrant service users who are grappling with the issues and challenges of intercultural communication in clinical and non-clinical healthcare settings. Using an innovative mixed method design, we produced 5 short films and supporting materials to help develop a more reflexive practice, and provide stimuli for debate on how to address the complexities of working in and through different language contexts. This project is of significance for the development of Scotland’s future generations of healthcare providers and interpreters, and for working towards providing a fairer and more equal health service. The project was funded by the AHRC, SFC and the British Council.

We would like to thank the healthcare providers, interpreters, and actors who all volunteered their time, making this project, the films and the educational materials possible.
