A World Not Ours
A World Not Ours
Documentary: Palestine (2012) / Director: Mahdi Fleifel / Running time: 93 mins
Arabic and English with English subtitles
A World Not Ours is an intimate, humorous, portrait of three generations of exile in the refugee camp of Ein el-Helweh, in southern Lebanon. Based on a wealth of personal recordings, family archives, and historical footage, the film is a sensitive, and illuminating study of belonging, friendship, and family.
Filmed over more than 20 years by multiple generations of the same family, this is more than just a family portrait; it is an attempt to record what is being forgotten, and mark what should not be erased from collective memory.
I Came From the Unknown to Sing
Documentary: Scotland (2015) / Director: Roxana Vilk / Running time: 10 mins
Arabic and English with English subtitles
Ghazi Hussein is an award winning Palestinian poet and writer living in Scotland. Living in exile in Syria, he was first imprisoned at the age of 14; he was never charged but was 'guilty of carrying thoughts'. This short film by award winning British/Iranian filmmaker Roxana Vilk explores his poetry as the narrative thread to unravel the complex emotional journey he has travelled through and how he came to eventually call Edinburgh his home.
