Highlife was born through a desire to bring a form of music globalisation to the clubs of Glasgow. Playing sounds that exist outside of typical Western genres, where localised World Music merges with house, techno and dubstep, Highlife has already earned such a reputation that it now fills a monthly post-Optimo Sunday night slot at the Sub Club.
Brian d’Souza, aka Auntie Flo and one of Highlife’s founders, burst onto the scene back in 2011 and has since received airplay on Radio 1 and a Pearson Sound remix, winning fans across the musical spectrum (including names on the DJ A-list). His sound encompasses classic house, disco, techno and electronica influences alongside afrobeat, kwaito, cumbia, South American rhythms and outsider music from all around the world.
For this Highlife night he teams up with South African Esa Williams (Sub Club/Burek) on an array of hardware and live percussion. As well as DJing under the name Esa, he's part of the Sensu live act and produces music as Mervin Granger, and his unique sounds have influenced various musical projects and events, including Subculture and McSorley’s. Together, the pair ended 2012 with a sold out, headline live show at Optimo’s New Year’s Eve party to critical acclaim. Expect an unparalleled party vibe that merges world sounds and afro-futurist music with classic house, disco, techno.
