Invisible Knowledge - Call for Participants

Wed 9 August — Fri 8 September 2017

Invisible Knowledge

Invisible Knowledge began in May 2015, as a meeting group for researchers in the arts, primarily aimed at those working in independent, PhD and early-career capacities. Using research to inform a public programme of events, the group seeks to consider the nature of independent research as it relates to attendant structures and contexts. The project was initiated by Viviana Checchia (Public Engagement Curator at CCA Glasgow), Emma Balkind and Tiffany Boyle, who selected the original members. Following the first two years of activity - and with Viviana and Tiffany as convenors - we are now ready to launch an open call for ten new members. All members should be based in Scotland.

We will meet bi-monthly as a group, and the aim of the initiative is to programme to this same timescale. The initial meeting will be held at CCA on Monday 30 October at 5pm. Collaborations between members of the IK group are encouraged, and there is a modest budget, support and space from CCA to support individual and collaborative proposals.

The aims of the Invisible Knowledge research group include:

  • Provision of a space in which researchers can produce programming which relates across / between / without institutional interests.

  • To critically assess where, when and how research takes place, within and beyond institutions today. The group will take a particular focus on how organisations such as CCA can utilise research within its programme, and what form a mutual exchange with researchers might take.

  • To act as a platform for profiling and giving visibility to researchers and their attendant research practices across the arts in Glasgow and Scotland, on an individual and collective basis.

  • For members to form pairings and clusters, according with common ground (or antagonisms) between their research and practices, and to produce public events/projects where members desire to do so. In the initial first two years of activity, areas of shared concerns have been writing practices, working with archives, feminism, moving image and curatorial discourse.

  • The group will be based within CCA, but members can, and should, initiate collaborations and partnerships with other galleries and spaces throughout Glasgow for events/projects.

Current members of the group are Aideen Doran, Caroline Gausden, Lyndsay Mann, Cecilia Stenbom, Jake Watts and Alberta Whittle. Applications to become a member of Invisible Knowledge can be made by submitting a CV and short statement (circa 500 words) by Friday 8 September. Please email arts.admin@cca-glasgow.com with the subject title Surname-NameIK. Selected members will be informed by Friday 22 September.

At the meeting on Monday 30 October, members will meet as a group to introduce themselves and their current research interests and practice. Food and drinks will be provided, however we are not able to cover travel expenses for attendance at meetings at this stage.
