McLaren 2014 Pierre Hebert and Andrea Martignoni Digital Scratch: Riding over Blinkity Blank

Filmmaker Pierre Hébert and musician and composer Andrea Martignoni present an evening of live animation, music and performance. Inspired by Norman McLaren's film Blinkity Blank, these pioneers of experimental performance will combine live scratch animation, digital mixing and improvised sounds to create a visual soundscape in celebration of McLaren’s legacy.

Pierre Hébert was the first recipient of the Norman McLaren Heritage Award for lifetime achievement, in 1988. He was strongly influenced by McLaren’s work, experimenting with the animation technique of engraving images directly on 16mm or 35mm processed black film. He later developed performances utilising live animation, scratching directly on to the rolling film loop, alongside improvised music and dance.

Andrea Martignoni is a long-time collaborator of Hebert’s. A performer, sound designer and historian of animation, teaching at the Academy of Fine Arts in Palermo, he is known for creating soundtracks for short animated films for artists such as Blu, Saul Saguatti, Michele Bernardi, as well as Pierre Hébert and others.
