Medieval Movie Club Presents: The Little Hours (2017)

Join us for the final film in the first MMC series to explore how contemporary depictions of the Middle Ages intersect with and shed light on 21st-century anxieties and preoccupations.

Set within a Tuscan monastery and based on Bocaccio’s The Decameron (14th c.), The Little Hours spins a tale of sexual hijinks, substance abuse, and witchy revelry amongst a group of repressed nuns and their horny fugitive of a gardener. Wildly irreverent, ribald, and laugh-out-loud funny, The Little Hours probes our expectations of medieval women, particularly enclosed ‘Brides of Christ’, and begs questions of our eternal fascination with immodest women and the image of nuns having fun.
