Medieval Movie Club Presents: Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991)
Join us for the second edition of ‘Medieval Movie Club’ and explore how contemporary depictions of the Middle Ages intersect with and shed light on 21st-century anxieties and preoccupations.
This month we will be presenting the slightly problematic yet highly fun Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, and we will take a look at medieval cross-cultural encounters and examine the workings of both medieval and modern Orientalism.
Prince of Thieves provides an access point for understanding the multiple geographical, theological and racial horizons of the Middle Ages, and we can use these facts to dismantle the notion of the ‘white’s only’ medieval world that has been so integral to the formation and development of white nationalism supremacy throughout time.
Doors: 6:00PM
The film will begin with a short introduction and will be followed by an open discussion and drinks in Saramago. MMC believes in democratising the Middle Ages and welcomes debate from anyone interested in the subject matter, from any background.
