As part of Rachel Maclean’s GENERATION exhibition, CCA is pleased to present a programme of iconic international films which engage with the process of independence and social change around the world.

Memories of Underdevelopment,1968, focuses on stories from the Cuban Revolution. Hailed as one of – if not the most – sophisticated films ever to come out of Cuba, this is visionary Cuban director Tomas Gutierrez Alea’s Tour de Force.

Following Sergio through his life, after the departure of his wife, parents and friends in the wake of the bay of pigs fiasco, alone in a brave new world, Sergio observes the constant threat of foreign invasion before meeting Elena, a young woman he seeks to mould into the image of his ex-wife, but at what costs to himself?

Memories of Underdevelopment offers a raw and uncompromising analysis of the newly formed system of government.

This film will be screened on a 16mm print, not 35mm as previously advertised. Apologies for any disappointment this may cause.
