Monorail Film Club & Saramago Rain The Colour Blue With A Little Bit Of Red In It

With Mdou Moctar in person.

The first feature film shot entirely in the Tuareg language, Akounak Tedalat Taha Tazoughai was co-written and directed by Portland-based Christopher Kirkley, whose Sahel Sounds label has been instrumental in bringing both lost and modern African music to the attention of global music lovers. The film, translated as Rain The Colour Blue With A Little Bit Of Red In It, stars Touareg guitar-slinger Mdou Moctar and as you may have guessed, is very loosely based on another motion picture featuring an axe-wielding troubadour dressed in purple.

Akounak Tedalat Taha Tazoughai tells the story of a young struggling musician in Agadez, Niger, played by Mdou Moctar, who carried by his trusted purple motorbike and Stratocaster, entrances audiences, defies cultural norms to practise his art and - like many restless troubadours - battles for love. Shot using an amateur cast on a shoestring budget and over only eight days, the result is, like Moctar’s music, gorgeous in places and infused with both raw energy and an off-the-cuff sense of humour. Its soundtrack also features some of the best, mind-bending “Tuareg desert guitar” playing you will hear.

We are honoured to welcome Mdou Moctar and his band to the screening as they will be on tour in Scotland. Mdou Moctar will be taking part in a Q&A session after the screening.

You can also pick up a reduced-price combined ticket at Monorail Music for both the screening and Mdou’s performance at the Hug And Pint on Friday 20th November

Mdou Moctar’s live concerts in Scotland are:

Glasgow, The Hug and Pint, Friday 20 November
Edinburgh. The Electric Circus, Saturday 21 November
