Pilot Residency Palestine

Open Call Pilot Residency Palestine

As a pilot residency, CCA is offering a month-long opportunity in Palestine. Focusing on Scottish-based artists, curators, designers and other cultural practitioners, this residency is specifically tailored to stimulate teaching and learning between Scotland and Palestine.
The selected artist will be based at the International Art Academy Palestine (IAAP) in Ramallah and prepare a two week teaching period for the current students. The IAAP is a unique community of artists, individuals and institutional partnerships, established in 2006, committed to the development of visual art in higher education in Palestine through offering a BA programme in Contemporary Visual Art in the heart of the city of Ramallah.

The IAAP is particularly concerned with how to teach contemporary art in a manner that addresses the historical, theoretical and practical breadth of the field, and that engages with local knowledge, geopolitical contexts and lived realities of Palestine.

The IAAP is the main project of the Palestinian Association for Contemporary Art (PACA), which was established in 2004 by a group of pioneering Palestinian artists including Suleiman Mansour, Nabil Anani, Khalid Hourani and Tayseer Barakat.

After the two week teaching period there is the possibility to develop further research of Palestine as a cultural geography.
Depending on the needs of the candidate, a network of local artists, architects, activists are available to meet and to travel through Palestine. This residency hopes to develop further cultural links between Scotland and Palestine.

Who can apply:

• We seek a candidate who has a strong commitment to the visual arts and its dissemination through teaching. This could be artists, activists, curators and critics.

The objectives of the exchange are to:

• support and stimulate artists by making available to them the means to carry out and disseminate their works;
• introduce the cultural landscape of Palestine;
• facilitate exchanges of artistic viewpoints and contribute to the establishment of durable ties between Palestinian and Scottish artists.

Terms:

• The grant awarded is 2000 pounds. The grant is awarded in order to cover the cost of travel, personal insurance, living expenses and costs incurred in the production of work.
• Accommodation is provided by IAAP.
• Please note that travelling throughout Palestine can be a difficult undertaking. We work with local partners for continuous support and advice on restrictions and safety.
Length of stay:
• One month from September 2016 onwards.

Location:

• Throughout Palestine, primarily based at IAAP in Ramallah. Other contacts and arrangements are available in Bethlehem, Jerusalem and Hebron.

Selection process:

• Closing date is 31 May 2016. Successful candidates will be notified in mid-June.
• CCA curatorial staff together with IAAP staff will select the candidate.

General criteria:

• Time spent must be on teaching, research and development of own work.
• The focus is on the contemporary artist whose emphasis is on the use of teaching.
• A report will need to be submitted at the end of the pilot residency.

To submit a proposal:

We would like a brief (one A4) motivation for this residency. It should contain a short proposal for the two week teaching period as well as a research/travel proposal for the other two weeks.
