Queering Translation by Camille Cornu

“I read with my body, I read and move to translate with my body, and my body is not the same as yours” - Kate Briggs.

This workshop is about queering, performing, experimenting with, and interrogating concepts of both translation and gender. Using extracts from French feminism as a starting point, we will question the politics of translation and explore creative ways to approach a foreign language.

Who and how do we choose to translate? Could interrogating the dominance of certain languages be a key to translation? What kind of new creative pathways could open up? Could working across languages challenge the ways in which we think about our genders and sexualities? What does it mean to translate into a dominant language?

No knowledge of French is required. All materials will be provided but if you prefer to write on a laptop or other device, please bring it with you.

Facilitator Bio

Camille Cornu is a writer based between Paris and Glasgow. They started focusing on linguistic dominance when they realised they would have to to start writing in English if they wanted their work to be seen in the UK, essentially starting a new writing career despite having already published several books in French. Their work explores the crossroads of gender and languages. They have been performing and publishing their poetry across France for 10 years and more recently in the UK.
