Re-thinking the Traditional: Billy Hill and Ramon Goose

Sat 8 August 2015

Billy Hill and Ramon Goose

Sixteen year old folk fiddler, Billy Hill has been performing at festivals and clubs for the last seven years - supporting Eliza Carthy, Tim Eriksen, Bruce Molsky, and Dave Swarbrick. Increasingly interested in integrating Jazz and Blues rhythms into the traditional music he plays, he teamed up with internationally recognised guitarist Ramon Goose, who has travelled across the Sahara Desert, and collaborated with many renowned African and Jazz musicians, including Diabel Cissokho, Daby Toure, Atongo Zimba, and Noumoucounda Cissokho ; and also Eric Bibb, Pee Wee Ellis, Chris Thomas King, Justin Adams and Julian Joseph, to name but a few.

Over the last eighteen months, these two musicians have been working together to develop an acoustic instrumental rocky sound which incorporates bluesy, syncopated rhythms from the Deep South, lovely violin solos, and also West African influences. They have featured several times on BBC Radio 6 Music, and their recording Glory in the Meeting House was chosen by musician and broadcaster Tom Robinson as one of his favourite tracks for 2014.

Copies of Re-Think, their new album, will be available on the night.

They will be joined by bassist Akos Hasznos.

This project is supported by Arts Council England, with Lottery funding.
