Saramago Presents: PEAKING LIGHTS, JAAKKO EINO KALEVI, CLIP ART, GENERAL LUDD (from midnight)
An all night extravaganza of music starting in the Theatre and moving on to Saramago Cafe.
Peaking Lights - approx. 10pm
Vivid, nocturnal and sensual, the eleven lean and lithe pop songs of Cosmic Logic follow 2012’s lauded Lucifer and are another progression in the band’s ever-evolving sound; their free-wheeling, far-reaching production and mesmeric, mantra-like songwriting pushing into brighter, bolder spaces than ever before.
It’s a record where a loving homage to The Flying Lizards’ ‘Der Song von Mandelay’ (opening track 'Infinite Trips'), The Carpenters re-interpretation of 1970’s prog rockers Klaatu (the interplanetary groove of 'Telephone Call') and the deliriously catchy digi-dub of lead single 'Breakdown' all coalesce with elements of Jamaican digital dancehall, Cosmic Italo, Chicago house and acid house, Afrobeat and Zamrock, early west coast hip-hop and disco boogie, into something both instantly recognisable and delightfully alien. Looking both to other cultures and the cosmos for inspiration, Cosmic Logic is a record that searches – a beacon in dark times.
Or, as Coyes puts it — “Peaking Lights’ whole thing has always been based on an idea of ‘Fucked Modern Pop' but exactly what that is, we don’t know…we’re still trying to figure that out.”
Let’s have fun trying…
Cosmic Logic is out on October 6 in the UK via Weird World.
Jaakko Eino Kalevi
Already something of a cult figure in Helsinki, where he lives and works part-time as a tram driver, Jaakko’s (pronounced “Yah-koh”) 2013 debut release for Weird World records is an alluring introduction to a charismatic artist whose softly psychedelic pop blends funk and folk in an intriguing and highly satisfying manner. A self-taught multi-instrumentalist who is happiest behind the drums, Jaakko plays, sings and produces all his own material. Having released a steady stream of diverse music on local labels for several years, Jaakko has long been considered one of Finland’s most promising young artists and with his signing to Weird World becomes the first ever Nordic artist to work with Domino or its subsidiaries in the label’s 20-year history.
As a taster for his album due in 2014, Dreamzone’s four songs take their cues from influences as broad-ranging as Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry (for his “singularity and drive”, explains Jaakko), the “softness and adultness” of Chris Rea, Finnish composer Jimi Tenor and the hyper-vivid fantasy worlds of the more contemporary Ariel Pink and Connan Mockasin. The result is a hugely enticing window into Jaakko’s world – a colourful, magical place where everything happens in its own time and nature and technology get along harmoniously. The EP’s lead track, ‘No End’, a duet with Helsinki vocalist Suad Khalifa, is an opiated love song tethered to a dubby groove, its cantering rhythm splashed with sax and an unforgettable keyboard solo. Well named, ‘No End’ is one of those tracks that could happily coast on forever.
Clip Art
Glasgow producer Steev Livingstone quite simply never puts his name to an uninteresting record. Best known as one third of much-loved "post-electro" band Errors, he also produced glorious analogue rave in the mid-'00s as half of sadly departed Glasgow flat-party fixtures Haunted House.
General Ludd
Richard McMaster and Tom Marshallsay have been making tracks and playing parties for the past few years, spreading their multifarious musical seeds across the world under various guises. This year has seen a number of 12" releases surface under the moniker General Ludd via labels such as New York's Mister Saturday Night, Optimo's Autonomous Africa and Clan Destine Traxx.
For this one off event the duo will take you through their kaleidoscopic blend of House, Disco and outer-national rhythms as we turn down the lights and go all night.
