Poet, playwright and musician Tawona Sithole published his first collection of poetry in 2006 and has since been widely published in the UK and abroad. He's also facilitated workshops in communities and schools, as well as being involved in theatre, commissions, radio appearances, residencies and studio recording. Originally from Zimbabwe, Tawona shares his heritage with others to keep him grounded, and helps increase awareness of the lesser-known perspectives of his experience as an African in Glasgow. Using these influences, he has developed a contemporary style of expression through mbira (traditional Zimbabwean music instrument), spoken word and creative writing and drama. Using humour to challenge stereotypes and misinformation, he draws on challenging experiences he has faced (such as racism) since living in a different culture from his own to try to link cultures together, and encourages the use of creative expression as a celebration for building positive self-esteem.
Tawona is also founder of Seeds of Thought, an arts group that meet and perform at CCA. He'll discuss their pioneering work promoting creative writing and performance in Glasgow.
