Body Remedy
Scripted Rhythms: Exploring Movement through Calligraphy with Aya Kobayashi
Tue 6 August 2024

Aya Kobayashi
Embrace a learning space for movement guided by vivid imagery and simple descriptions. This workshop is dedicated to exploring the tactile textures and rhythms of movement, drawing parallels between dance and the fluid strokes of calligraphy or the expressive techniques of painting. Participants are invited to rethink the use of space and volume in dance, channelling their individual expressions within a communal setting.
Based in Glasgow and hailing from Japan, Aya Kobayashi is a versatile performer, choreographer, and teacher. With a rich resume including collaborations with Yael Flexer, Gecko Theatre, and more, she's a key figure in Collective Endeavours, specializing in improvisational performance. Aya champions inclusion, leading intergenerational projects and working with inclusive communities like Anjali and Indepen-Dance. As a movement director for Tricky Hat Productions, she amplifies life stories on stage. A lecturer at RCS, she hosts professional classes via The Work Room, nurturing Glasgow's dance community. Aya also engages with galleries such as Tate and V&A Museum, spreading her art internationally from Cairo to Tokyo.
This movement session is open level for black people and people of colour who identify as women and/or non-binary.
