Side by side, above and below, in pleasure and pain.

Sitting with a pain in your ass, your mouth full of warm chocolate, your right shoe has a tiny pebble stuck in it and your left toe is sticking out a small hole in your sock, your body is hot from an intimate moment you lived previous to arriving to this talk and each time your phone vibrates, (even though you left it in silent mode) something begins to twitch and sparkle in your body. From this place, side by side, above and below, in presence and absence, living and feeling the possibilities of both pleasure and pain. Colombian visual artist Juan Betancuth and Glasgow based performance artist Laura Fisher will enter into a dialogue, a conversation, a storytelling and a sharing around their proximities to pleasure and pain within and across their lives, lived experiences and artistic practices. This will be an informal conversation between four airy - watery creatures, in and out of English and Spanish. Juan and Laura will be accompanied by Glasgow/ Berlin/ Bogota based artist & performer, Romany Dear and Emilia Beatriz, artist & access worker from Puerto Rico’s diaspora based in Glasgow.

The event will be accompanied by two BSL interpreters, Karen Forbes and Sumayya Si- Tayeb. There will also be live captioning with Andrew Howell.

The conversation will happen in zoom, and will be streamed live, people are invited to enter and join the conversation via a free link.

A recording of the event will also remain available via the event page on The CCA website and can be accessed later. There will be an audio transcription PDF made available for download after the talk also. You can also email romnaydear2105@gmail.com directly if you would like access to either of these materials.

This event has been funded and supported by Creative Scotland and through in-kind space from The CCA. This event is part of a larger ongoing research project between Romany Dear and Juan Betancurth called Sound Bodies. Most recently including a live performance at The judson Church with The Movement Research Center in NYC, a video installation part of the exhibition “Que se puede un Cuerpo” in, Espacio El Dorado, in Bogotá, Colombia and a series of movement workshops with performance students at La Universidad Nacional, in Bogotá, Colombia.

Other sister events linked to this event are two upcoming free workshops, one at The CCA on the 2nd November and one with Indepen-Dance on 27th October. Please email romanydear2105@gmail.com for more information, and- or if you have any questions regarding any of the above.

Laura Fisher

Laura Fisher (she/they), is a disabled dance artist and performance maker based in Glasgow. A Gemini sun, she’s equally at home on a sweaty dance floor at 4am as she is resting in bed with her cat. Laura works at the intersections of dance, sculpture, participatory practice, and live art, with a conceptually rigorous approach to performance dramaturgy. Interested in the politics of spatiality, embodiement and social choreography, they often work site specifically or responsively, making gentle observations and interventions to site through artistic encounter that seek to shift the social choreography of a space. Laura is currently researching human – material relations in performance as a crip practice that creates space for new and divergent aesthetic languages of movement. They are eternally grateful to work with a host of talented collaborators, who are fundamental to the creation of all their work.

Juan Betancurth

Juan Betancurth (he) is a visual artist based in Bogota, Colombia. His work has a collective and performative aspect. Betancurth is interested in the deconstruction of cultural archetypes to create new concepts of the object, the body, gender, and identity. His installations, sculptures, videos, and actions are often opportunities to inhabit spaces and promote new interactions with the public, awakening a morbid curiosity that encourages spontaneous interactions with his work. He has exhibited internationally in countries such as Canada, the USA, Mexico, Peru, Brazil, England, Germany, Poland, Finland, the Czech Republic, and North Korea, among others.

Emilia Beatriz

Emilia Beatriz (they) Artist and Access Worker who is currently living and working between Puerta Rico and Glasgow.

Romany Dear

Romany Dear (she/they) is an artist, performer, researcher, moving, writing & spilling out across arts, education and access oriented spaces, currently living and working between the UK, Berlin & Bogota. Her work is based on dance as a practice of collective and social action, curious about the in-possibilities of connecting, a current fascination with cables and plugs, the messiness of care and a commitment to “keeping company”.
