STUC LGBT+ Workers' Committee LGBT History Month Event
Thu 9 February 2017
To celebrate LGBT History Month and following on from last year’s successful event, the STUC LGBT+ Workers’ Committee will be screening ‘After Stonewall’, a retrospective of the Lesbian and Gay Rights movement from the 1969 Stonewall riots to the turn of the century. ‘After Stonewall’, the sequel to ‘Before Stonewall’ (shown last year), is narrated by Melissa Etheridge and captures the hard work, struggles, tragic defeats and exciting victories experienced during this time. It also explores how AIDS dramatically changed the direction of the movement.
The two films, Before & After, tell the remarkable tale of how LGBT people, a heretofore hidden and despised group, became a vibrant and integral part of America's family, and, indeed, the world community.
The film will be followed by a panel debate with Jeffrey Meek, lecturer in Economic and Social History at Glasgow University and Adele Patrick, from the Glasgow Women’s Library. The speakers will reflect not only on the issues raised in the film but will also consider the ongoing fight for LGBT+ equality in Scotland today.
