In a Cloud of Seabirds: The Art of Collaborating
In a Cloud of Seabirds: The Art of Collaborating with Artist/Illustrator, Douglas Robertson
As an artist, Douglas Robertson has been using the written and spoken word extensively in his work for over twenty years. Through collaborations with poets, past and present, the marriage between the visual and textual has become an integral inspiration in his creative process. This has allowed a love of poetry and language to flourish, and now acts as the fundamental drive behind his studio practice and in his work for exhibitions and publications. Through numerous collaborations, he has worked closely with authors to merge the worlds of word and image, and create projects where the two work in unison to communicate the vision of writer and painter.
But how can you create images, whether artistic or written, that effectively fuse both the literal and visual elements, and produce images that are balanced, so as to govern the pace and view that the audience experience? Be it a book or an exhibition, the work must be carefully designed so as to accurately, and emotively, reflect the creator's intentions.
In this talk Douglas Robertson with discuss how his work has lead him to develop an understanding and appreciation of how vision and verse, sound and structure can effectively communicate with the eyes, hearts and minds of the audience, and how the dialogue between writer, artist and audience is the real measure of success, with words, images and emotions uniting to create a true collaboration.
